The Live Streaming Video

on August 22, 2018

I have just been watching some of the live streaming video from the Nikon company regarding their newest camera system - the Z -mount mirrorless cameras. The presenter is quite precise in his speech if a little general in his words - this is to be expected on a professional level.

Ever since the inception of the mirror-less concept - making a digital camera with a decent-sized sensor and interchangeable lens system - there have been increases in specification by other makers. You might liken it to the campaigns of the mid forties in the Pacific. First small gains, then major advances, then a stranglehold on the photo market. Then someone drops something big - full-frame big - on the market and eventually the heads of formerly-imminent photographic companies have to admit that the commercial war has not necessarily gone to their advantage...

Well, no-one's signing anything in Tokyo Bay today, but the video live stream does seem to present the Nikon product as a chance for them to progress again in a way that the buying public will approve. It looks as though there will be a new lens lineup with the new mount and adapters that allow the older digital...and perhaps even film...lenses to be utilized. The people who have extensive collections of Nikon glass will breathe a sigh of relief with this. But they should really look forward to the new lenses with the native Z mount.

The next thing to be seen is the alacrity with which the Nikon Corporation can distribute the new goods to the shops, and present them in concrete form to the buyers. An entertaining and promising video presentation is a fine thing, but pressing an actual shutter button in an actual shop is the thing that leads people to actually reaching for their wallets...

I'll keep you as posted here as I am kept posted. Let's hope.
