As a little kid, long-term was an hour - if you could sustain interest and activity for that much time people said you were either a genius or a nuisance. The punishment for either personality was very much the same. Then came adulthood and the long commitments really started - take a look at a mortgage document and see what I mean. But a lot of this pales into insignificance when you look at what some photographers are prepared to do over a very long period.
A case in point is Nick Melidonis' 2-decade dedication to photography of Greece. He's been a visitor there many times and helped other people to see the country. Of course his camera and lenses have been busy all that time - and Nick will open a free exhibition of some of the most representative results at a gallery in Fremantle.
It'll be at the PSAS Gallery, 22-26 Pakenham Street, Fremantle. Opening times are to be 10:00AM to 4:00PM. The exhibition starts on 26 June and goes to the 4th of June, so you can squeeze in a couple of weekends to see it. Google up Nick's site and get more information on it. It is a perfect example of perseverance and foresight in choosing a subject...and having the skill to do it well.
Of course, some people will say that Greece chose Nick instead of the other way round, but that's quibbling. You go where your heart and soul take you - but it's a real mark of character to be able to do the hard work of sticking to your plans for decades.
Note that this year is a significant one for Greek people - it's 200 years ago they began a war for their independence. They'll whoop it up again in 2029 to celebrate success in that venture. Nick's exhibition is part of the official celebration.
I don't have a picture of Greece myself and it's not nice to pinch one of Nick's for the heading image, so you get a nice flag instead.
