Sunrise, Sunset...

Sunrise, Sunset... Quickly fly the years...* I see that NiSi - the rectangular landscape filter people - have brought out a limited edition item for the landscape and seascape photographers - the Sunrise/Sunset GND kit. The bits you get in the kit are simple: a. One 16X medium ( 4 stop ) graduated Neutral Density glass filter in the 100 x 150 size. b. One 16X reverse ( 4 stop ) graduated Neutral Density glass filter in the 100 x 150 size. c. One re-enforced storage box for these and 6 other filters. d. A booklet of photographic ideas and instruction. The glass filters are, of course, truly neutral and superbly made. The medium one is a straightforward grad filter that goes from the 4 stop grey to clear in a short gradient. The reverse is somewhat more specialised - running from light filtering on top to increased grad to a very pronounced deepening at the horizon line. This would appear to allow the sun when near the horizon to be held back considerably in comparison to the sky and land or water. The interesting thing is that these filters are supplied with particular reference to the geography of Australia. Photographers on the eastern seacoast will be issued with the filter that allows them to capture sunrise over the water while those in WA will get the one that allows them to do the sunset over the water. Those people who are going to use them for dawn seascape shots at Eagle Bay or Dunsborough or North West Cape may want to carry both sets...Seascape shooters at Meekatharra can make do with either one... The real eye-popper in this set is that carry case. I could wish that all camera makers would look at this and provide us with camera cases of similar design. It combines elegance with strength and a retro appeal that is very much like the system cases of the thirties. The days of great leatherwork are not dead, it would seem, and the hand crafters need encouragement. * Your earworm for the day. You're welcome...
