The Barbershop Experience - Part Two - The Bob Cut

on November 27, 2017
As you'll no doubt pick up before the end of the week - the Barbershop bag company like to name their products after hairstyles or things to do with facial hair. It's a harmless fantasy, and one that I find charming. I note that when you get to their camera straps they use " Sideburns ", " Moustache " and " Full Beard " as names plus a wrist strap that is called the " Razor ". At present they do not seem to offer what is rather inelegantly termed a " bum bag ", but if they ever do, I am hanging out waiting for the name. I could suggest a few, but I'll bet they would ignore me... Well, the next size up from the " Pageboy " is the " Bob Cut " - rather an attractive hairstyle for women and one that is probably easy to manage. I wouldn't know, as it has been some time since I have had enough hair to fling around. I chose a canvas and leather version of this for my own studio and travel bag. It is big enough to take a full-sized iPad plus the necessary charger as well as a larger mirror-less body and two or three lenses. I also pack the largest of the Fujifilm portable speedlights in mine. The bag is fitted with a detachable shoulder strap and pad, but I prefer to unclip this for local use and just use the two side handles. There's a rain flap that pops over the zippered top, but I hope not to have to test this out between home and studio. Currently I have taken out one divider to fit the gear but Barbershop emphasize that their gear is multi-configurable. I daresay I'll change my mind and reset it in the future. The example in the Murray Street shop is the full leather version - it adds a little weight to what you carry but has more water resistance - plus whatever style cachet leather may have for you. This is personal taste - you suit yourself. I count six variants - three in cloth - three in leather. Note that the leather handle design holds the weight securely. I can also attest that the handles are very comfortable - unlike some other maker's products that depend on folded nylon handles. They can cut into you after a short period of time. Needless to say, the " Bob Cut " fits well within the domestic airlines carry-on envelope and you will not need to trust it to baggage handlers. Not when it looks that good. One thing I have yet to figure out about my " Bob Cut "...it has a leather captive strap and clip that is long enough to go from the inside out a fair way - but I don't know what you would fasten to it. Something that you need to take out but not lose, presumably.
