They rarely quote the engine displacement in the specification sheets for cameras. Megapixels, frames per second, focusing points, yes, but you never get to read how many litres the engine actually is. Or, for that matter, the sprung weight of the chassis. As most of our regular readers know, there is more than one kind of lens. New photographers may not consider it, but they need to think through their choices before they pay their money. Here are some considerations. Leave aside the optical performance of various lenses in between manufacturers. You can rest assured that in each major maker's lens lineup there will be an equivalent of their rival's lens. If not right now, then as soon as the design department can go out in the Ginza and buy one and pull it apart. Pardon my humour at the expense of the company slogan. It is just lightheartedness at viewing the new display racks at the side and ends of the Stirling Street store. The sight of new shelving systems or storage racks has a tendency to do that to old shop employees. Note: retail sales assistants on holiday go to shops in other cities and either envy them their layout or secretly sneer at them. We cannot help it - it is like a bus driver on holiday taking the bus. The only exception is the Leica boutiques and they are remarkably similar wherever you see them - here's one in the QVB building in Sydney. Magnificant setting but still very Leica Boutique inside.
