Lomography Is A State Of Never Mind

on October 02, 2011
With digital photography you can be too good for your own good. You can spend the rent money for the next year chasing that final megapixel and once you have caught it....well, the manufacturers change to the next model and the starter’s whistle blows again.

Stop. Relax. Take a deep breath and some pocket change, and buy a LOMO camera. You are transported right back to the toy camera 1960’s and you can play photography all day - and you don’t have to put your toys away when it gets dark - they even have pretty electronic flashes in some models.

This isn’t rocket science or brain surgery - this is plastic cameras with simple lenses. This is 35mm or 120 film. This is two shutter speeds and three apertures and a tripod socket. Direct frame finders. Pop colours on the plastic bodies. This is never-mind-the-science-press-the button-and hope.

Given the marvels of modern emulsions and processing, you can come back with surprisingly interesting images. They have their own look, and their own feel, and you will be the only person at the party who looks cool - and whose pictures everyone else wants to see next week.

Remember to file those negatives in a manila envelope for true retro authenticity.
